Anyone else there right now? Feeling self consciou Anyone else there right now? Feeling self conscious speaking Mandarin Chinese (or other target/heritage language) to your kids at the playground, in front of their friends?

I used to feel so so super self conscious…..Unaware the insecurities of my childhood as an immigrant were surfacing as I focused on teaching my kids my heritage language.

But I kept at it because it was more important to me that they’re able to speak with relatives and stay connected with their heritage.

Slowly, those feelings faded as I worked this new muscle and now I have no problem talking to me kids in front of their friends or out in public in Mandarin.

I also see the value of speaking English at the playground when needed because that’s how parents communicate there (dealing with skills kids are learning like turn taking and being considerate of others.)

It’s rewarding and healing to see my daughter unashamedly speaking Mandarin in front of her friends and seeing how some even want to learn Chinese because of her. In preschool she proudly brought a Chinese children’s book to school for show and tell without thinking twice❤️.

Bilingual parenting isn’t for the faint of heart, but you’ll be surprised how healing it can be for the little child of immigrants inside you ❤️.

If you want support for your bilingual parenting journey that not only provides great resources and research backed techniques but also helps you process the hard heart stuff that comes up, get on the waitlist for my membership by clicking the link in my profile.⬆️

🥮 Come with me in celebrating Mid-Autumn Festiv 🥮 Come with me in celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival! One of my favorite major Chinese holidays. I have such fond memories running around my grandparents house in Taiwan with my paper lantern and lighting sparklers with my cousins. Something about how most of the celebration takes place at night makes it more magical for kids.

🥮Celebrating Chinese holidays is a simple way to make language learning fun and meaningful for kids. If you’ve been having a hard time getting your child to enjoy Chinese, try celebrating Mid-Autumn festival with them and share stories from your childhood.

🥮Culture not only connects us to our heritage but also gives deeper meaning and context to the language. That’s why I try to incorporate it into our family.

🥮What’s your favorite memory of the holiday? How will you celebrate with your kids this year?

🫣Many of us grew up hating Chinese. Dreading we 🫣Many of us grew up hating Chinese. Dreading weekend Chinese school. Shamed for not knowing the language well enough despite “looking like” we should speak it. So then Chinese become associated with boring and something annoying.

❤️ As parents passing down the language, we have a chance to change this. Learning Chinese CAN be fun and something that brings us closer as a family.

🎉 How we accomplish this is not so much setting up endless fun activities (unless that’s the thing you love), but mostly facing our own negative mindsets about Chinese and making the learning doable for ourselves. When we walk in our power lane, own the fact that we know our kids best, clearly know our goals for learning Chinese…we’re able to not only help our kids enjoy the language but also thrive in the language.

😉 Does this sound like something you want to see in your home? Join the waitlist for my membership (link in profile). Say goodbye to worry and mom-guilt, discover how to thrive in Chinese.
